Its really rather simple, the people who would like to sell you rifle scopes want you to have maximum success using their products so the folks at Nightforce Optics make their ballistic software programs surprisingly inexpensive. At the time of this writing most of the programs cost about $65, a small fee considering the cost of ammunition like Federal Premium Ammunition. This program has lots of capabilities as it can formulate zero points in seconds. A shooter simply inputs some basic ballistic information, such as bullet weight, muzzle velocity, ballistic coefficient of the bullet, scope height in relation to the bore, and original point of zero. There is a place to manipulate environmental like altitude, air temperature and relative humidity. Once the data is in the user simply clicks the Calculate button and the software will report the required rifle scope adjustment required to hit any target between zero and 1,000 yards, in 25 yard increments. If longer distances are needed you can do 2000 yards in 50 yard increments. Want to know how much havoc the wind might play on your shot its no problem you can plug in any wind speed and wind direction and run what ifs until your dizzy. There is even a place in the software where you can use the entered ballistic information to calculate what the point of impact will be for each of the points of the rifle scope reticle.
For instance, lets say you own an Nightforce NXS Rifle Scope and its equipped with a NP-R2 reticle. After you’ve put in your ballistic information you simple find the hot key at the top of the software, it looks like a reticle, and click on it. You confirm the magnification of your rifle scope, lets say full magnification of 22x, and then select the reticle that your scope is equipped with, that would be the NP-R2. You press the calculate button and up comes the point of impact for each of the tick marks on the vertical post. Important Note: Like most other scopes on the market Nightforce Rifle Scopes have cross hairs located in the rear of the scope, know as second image focal plane reticles. Whenever you have a scope with this feature and your shooting a ballistic style reticle, the points of impact for the tick marks is magnification specific. So if your third line down is dead on at 425 at 22x it wont be 425 at 10x.
We highly recommend this Nightforce Ballistic Software it will save you time and money and in no time at all you’ll turn old faithful into a tack driving machine once again. So if you find yourself in the market for a new Nightforce Rifle Scope make sure you also look into this ballistic software product.
